Doctors use a number of ways to preform a physical exam to deturmine the desiese.
- Doctors can start with a chest x-ray
- Doctors can preform a bronchoscope. this is a small tube that enters through the mouth or nose that enables them to look into the breathing tubes and the lungs. They can then take a biopsy a small sample of tissue to be examined.
- Doctors can take a needle and enter through the chest to remove a sample of tissue or fluid from the lungs or tumor to be examined.
- Doctors can do a thoracoscopy which is an operation where they open the chest.
Other Mesothemial linings are located around the heart and the abdomin and other reproductive organs. The cancer can occur there but not very often.

There are rougly 6 stages to mesothelioma cancer.
- Stage O - The cancer is limited to the brochial lining and air passeges and has'nt invaded the lung tissue and can usually be treated because it was caught early.
- Stage I - The cancer is found only in the lung tissues and has not spread to other organs or the lymph nodes. Chances are high still if caught and treated at this stage.
- Stage II - The cancer has spread to the chest wall, or the lympth nodes. Servival rates drop to 50% and below when its caught and treated at this stage.
- Stage IIIA - The cancer has spread to the lympth nodes, and other sourounding areas and organs. Usually at this point it is no probably no longer treated with surgery, but with radiation and Keomtherapy.
- Stage IIIB - The cancer has spread into the heart, estophogus, blood vessels or trachea. Again surgery is not usually done but treated with radiation and kemo. Survival rate is down to 15% or less from this point.
- Stage IV - The cancer has spread to the bones, liver or the brain. Treated with radiation and kemotherapy, survival is down to 2% or less at this point.
